Act now on Water and Sanitation:
Clean water and decent sanitation are fundamental to life. So it’s staggering that in our world one-third of the population don’t have access to a decent toilet, and many women in Africa and Asia still have to walk for hours a day to collect water to drink.
It’s an injustice that needs to end.
Too often, those in power have forgotten the issue of water and sanitation. World leaders have overlooked the fact that, without better access to water and sanitation, around the world we'll struggle to reduce the number of children who die before their fifth birthday, achieve universal education, or remove the unnecessary burden placed on clinics and hospitals.
This needs to end
Later this year, governments from across the world will meet together at the first annual high-level meeting on water and sanitation. This is a vital opportunity to agree what more needs to be a done to put an end to this scandal, but before that world leaders will meet at the G8 in Italy. When they meet we need to show that around the world people are calling for extraordinary action.
Take Action:
Join together with other members of Integral Alliance across the world, and send a message to Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, asking that as he chairs the G8 this year he ensures that leaders commit to take extraordinary action to deal with a crisis that costs millions of lives each year.
Dear Prime Minister Berlusconi It is a scandal that 2.5 billion people live without access to a safe toilet and almost a billion are still waiting for clean water. As Chair of the G8, we urgently need your leadership to tackle establish a Global Framework for Action to tackle a crisis that kills 5,000 children every day. This should be an agreement in which: Developing countries create national plans to deliver sanitation and water to all. It really pays to invest in sanitation and water. For every $1 spent on these services, an economy gains an estimated $8 through better health, education and productivity. Doing nothing is costing too much. Please act now to End Water Poverty |
